Area businesses are involved in a food fight for Second Harvest during the month of September.

30 businesses in all are battling it out for Second Harvest's 5th annual "Food Fight" program

Joseph businesses but it's not nearly as messy as you might think sot: melissa ryser, second harvest- "we will see who the winners are and see who has raised the most amount of food and funds."

A friendly competition is underway 34 local businesses are displaying these food fight signs on their doorsin an effort to fill up their second harvest donation boxes-- to come out as 2020's food fight "golden can award" winners sot: ryser- "each dollar that's given equals 2 lbs of food, so that really helps the businesses as far as to say we've won the competition and done our part."

Some businesses are persuading customers to donate a shelf-stable food itemsot: kilee thomas, kq2- "country cookie is partnering with second harvest.

For customers that come in and bring a canned good, they also get a free classic cookie."

Sot: josie o'daniell, country cookie- "even if they only get one free cookie, they'll still bring in an armful of cans just because they want to support us and they want to support second harvest and they want to support the town."

Hazels coffee is pouring a free cup of coffee for customers bringing a canned good every sunday as well as giving them 10% off their order all the donations go toward the food bank's campus cupboard program..which gives students food to bring home from school.

Sot: ryser- "lots of people bring peanut butter and jelly, things that kids really love.

Boxed macaroni and cheese.

All of the good stuff."

While it helps the fight to end hunger shines a light on small business sot: o'daniell- "every single year, we do second harvest.

It's always extremely successful" "every year we fill up like at least two of the second harvest boxes, they're usually overflowing."

Sot: ryser- "they're working hard for us and they really care about the community and really depend on the community too."
