HIGHWAY SEEN FROM REARVIEW WINDOW OF CAR STORY: Arne Toman, Doug Tabbutt and spotter Berkeley Chadwick broke a cross-country driving record from New York to Los Angeles last month, traversing the United States in just 27 hours and 25 minutes, the trio and automotive journalists say.

The three averaged 103.1 miles per hour (165kph) for 2,825 miles (4546 kilometers) on their journey from November 11-12.

Known as the "Cannonball Run" with no set rules, the drive is illegal as it involves breaking many speed limits and traffic laws.

The team drove in a 2015 Mercedes-AMG E63 and broke the last record of 28 hours and 50 minutes set in 2013.

The illegal road rally is named after journalist Brock Yates's Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash from the '70s and a 1981 film "The Cannonball Run" starring Burt Reynolds.
