Study digs into Josephine County law enforcement funding crisis

X newswatch12's cassidy delamarter is digging into the shocking statistics this study has revealed.

She joins us now live from josephine county.

Cassidy, how is this funding crisis impacting those who live in imagine calling 9-1-1 ... and help never showing up.

That's what's happening right now in josephine county.

Last year alone, nearly 8- thousand calls never got a response from a law enforcement officer.

This information is coming from a study commissioned by a local group called "securing our safety."

The director of research for this study says when you call 9-1-1 there are a lot of things that have to happen before someone can show up to help you.

The most important thing is that people have to be available to respond and they have to be close enough to get to you during an emergency.

Patrol officers are the ones to respond.

And in josephine county, there's only 23.

That's one deputy for every 2,135 people.

Kelly jarvis - director of research and community health "so when you're thinking about patrol coverage it's both the number of deputies out there and available and then the number of hours they are available per day.

So if its only 12 hours a day and you have a crisis at 2am that means no one is available to come."

That's what happens in josephine county, specifically for the 60-percent of the population that doesn't live in grants pass near the department of public safety.

Tonight at 6, i'll be here breaking down how this funding crisis is creating a domino effect... by decreasing safety and increasing crime in josephine county.

In grants pass, cassidy delamarter, newswatch12.
