Holiday shopping is in full swing and with a record setting cyber monday in the books, billions of packages will be showing up on doorsteps all over the country -- maybe even yours -- áif it isn't stolen first.

Spokane police say package thieves -- or porch pirates -- are especially active during the holidays and it only takes a few seconds to become a victim.

New on nightside -- kyle simchuk explains the simple steps you can take -- to keep your deliveries safe.

These thefts happen year round but they really pick up during the holidays.

Fortunately -- it's not too hard to protect your property.

They are the closest things to the grinch himself.

Stealing christmas presents right off the front porch -- in most cases -- while people are at work trying to earn an áhonest living.

Usa today estimates that 30-percent of americans have been the victim of package thieves -- we've covered several cases in spokane.

It's not the most expensive thing, but now everyone's ordering christmas presents.

It ranges from annoyed to really, really angry and it's really painful,"while it's easy to become a victim -- it's also easy to protect your property.

For example -- instead of having that playstation delivered to your front door -- ship it to your work or office instead.

If that's not an option -- have your package delivered to a remote pickup site.

Amazon has several hub lockers around spokane -- they'll give you the code to open the box.

Fedex and ups also offer similar options.

Police recommend tracking your deliveries online.

If you must have them shipped to your house, talk to your neighbor -- see if they can collect the package.

Finally, consider getting a video doorbell.

They may not always stop a porch pirate in their tracks, but they can help police identify them.

Spokane police are doing emphasis patrols -- officers will be in unmarked cars following delivery drivers -- trying to catch porch pirates red handed.
