Meth use increasing in Madison; use quadruples in state in last decade

Meth use is now a problem in communities where it hasn't previously been a big ncern... including right here in madison.

For years, the majority of the state's meth use has been in northern wisconsin communities... but now the state crime lab says the problem is shifting south.

Jamie perez joins us with the staggeringumber of meth cases we are seeing here.

Jamie?

Since 2008, meth use has quadrupled in wisconsin.

The doj says just 10 years ago, they saw around 300 cases... now they're seeing more than 1200... and those are just the cases that are reported.

Today i found out why this is happening in madison and why now.

In the last 10 years, meth use has skyrocketed in wisconsin.

What was once considered a mostly rural drug... is now shifting to urban areas, including madison.

21:33:42 skye boughmann: we are seeing more and more people coming in related to a methamphetamine overdose.

Sky boughmann with safe communities said she's seen more people using meth in recent years here in madison... something she says may go hand-in-hand with the opioid epidemic.

21:35:25 as the opioid epidemic got so much worse, a lot of people transitioned from opioids onto methamphetamine because the withdrawal symptoms are not as painful it's something staff at tellurian recovery center have also been seeing more of.

Brian lochen, medical direcor tellurian 21:43:33 the meth has come to the madison area from northern wisconsin and the dakotas and rural areas.

We are starting to see more of it here.

Lochen said in his decades of experience in this line of work..

He sees a trend where people will switch from using uppers to downers and vice versa.

Something boughman experienced herself... 21:35:48 personally, i struggled with opioid addiction and cocain addiction and then i stopped using those and i became dependent on methamphetamine for a while.

The state crime lab is keeping track of the spread of meth to our area... this is the difference between 2008 and now in the state... in dane county... 7 cases in 2008... 21 this year.

It's a growing concern for the people who help treat those with a substance use disorder because there still is no solid treatment for it.

21:34: skye: with methamphetamines and amphetamines we really don't have that much in our tool box 21:45:51 there's nothing right now that's a great options for methamphetamine.

Both boughmann and lochen say they unfortunately expect to see these numbers climb even more...but that they'll continue doing their part to help where they can.

21:36:14 addiction is addiction and it's so damaging they say the best thing you can do to help with this.... is to get the people who are dealing they say the best thing you can do to help with this.... is to get the peop who are dealing with substance use disorder the help they need... and to avoid calling them an addict.

They say it creates a negative label and their recovery will only come from feeling included and regarded as any other member of the community.

Thanks
