Drivers in tupelo may have to slow their roll as the mayor plans to present a new project that will set certain speed zones around the city.

Wtvas amanda haley joins us with how mayor shelton's wants to make tupelo roads more safe... for drivers as well as pedestrians.

Tupelo mayor jason shelton tells me that the city administration plans to present the new idea to city council members in the next couple of weeks.

According to the mayor, the speed limit project will establish a clear range of speed limits for each type of street in the city.

Such as residential roads being set between 20-30 miles per hours.

And arterial roads, or through roads being up to 50 miles per hour.

He says this is to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians, but he says it will also help keep the traffic flow consistent.

Shelton says that one of his focuses in this project is neighborhood speed limits.

"to decrese the speed, throughtout the city, particualry in neighborhoods, like cars going to fast..

The traffic committee will then be able to adjust speed limits under this policy."

So when there is a complaint about a roadway, regarding accidents or driver speed, the traffic committee in tupelo will use this new zoning plan to make changes to the speed based on the type of road.

The mayor says that if the council approves the plan then the speed zoning a set classifications will go into place
