Sparta Area School District to resume classes; police determine 'no direct threat' to safety

Afterschool activities will go on as planned for sparta students tonight after school was canceled because of safety concerns.

Staff with the sparta area school district canceled classes today after they received a report... of a missing handgun... that was potentially in the hand of a student yesterday.

News 8's jordan fremstad spoke with the sparta police department...he joins us with the latest.

Mike and martha, school officials and sparta police say there is no direct threat to student safety.

That means all activities are on for tonight and classes will start up again tomorrow.

They say they closed school to make sure there was no threat to anyone within the district.

All was quiet at every building within the sparta area school district.

An effort by school staff and law enforcement to make sure everyone in the district stays safe.

On monday just before 3 staff locked down the district after school officials were made aware of a social media post of a student holding a handgun.

A statement from the sparta school district says administrators made the decision to close school because they received information the handgun was missing and possibly in the possession of a student.

The district also says it does not know where that student is, but an investigation by the sparta police department found there is no direct threat to student safety.

"never at anytime was there a direct threat made toward the school students or staff."

Lieutenant booker ferguson says they initially thought the gun was stolen...but there was actually no crime committed.

"we determined it was not reported stolen and the student was within his legal authority to have held the hand gun."

He says the district had to make a decision to ensure the safety of every student and teacher.

"there's an increased scrutiny on these type of incidents.

A lot of these cases are taken more seriously these days.

The school has to look at them differently."

Ferguson says law enforcement will be at school as students and staff return to their normal routines.

"we are going to have an increased law enforcement presence that would be noticed at the school.

Our presence is simply just for the comfort of the student as they return to their normal activities."

Ferguson says law enforcement has spoken to the student in question and says the student did not have a gun at that time.

They also say they don't plan to press any charges in this case.

Thanks jordan, sparta police officials say they will decide tomorrow if they will continue to have more police secerity at the schools the rest of the week.
