Scientists teach research through art, film

For the first time, Sigma Xi's annual conference at the Monona Terrace incorporated art into education at the STEM Art and Film festival Sunday, when the public was invited to explore science, technology, engineering and math through visual arts.

The state's only free ferry.

One of the oldest and largest scientific organizations in the world...sigma xi...hosted its annual conference today at the monona terrace today.

But as photojournalist emilie burditt shows... the group is adding a twist to how it shares its research.

P- sot (((ron endres, volunteer, the prairie enthusiasts "i had a small idea and i had a lot a lot of people tell me it wouldn't work."))) at the sigma xi's annual conference...me mbers are sharing their research and scientific discoveries with the public.

But they're running into a problem.

Sot (((ron endres, volunteer, the prairie enthusiasts "they're a world class science organization and they're looking at the world from a science perspective...)))) ....where art isn't in the picture.

But for the first time ever...sigma xi is changing that.

At the end of its three-day conference...it was artists who were in the spotlight.

Sot (((jamie vernon, executive director, sigma xi, for people who might be turned away from science because it's a little complex, we're trying to include the unvierse of options in the art world to communicate some of the science we've been spotlighting.

It was the creative representation of the art that triggered these conversations.))) so between art...film...and jewelery...scient ists are finding a new voice.

Sot (((ron endres, volunteer, the prairie enthusiasts, i make native seed necklaces out of seed i collected.

Art is an expression and people want to express what they suppport.

It's like wearing a tshirt that shows your favorite team.

It shows you're in support.))) endres isn't making a profit from his sales.

For himself and sigma xi...art is a tool for education.

Sot (((jamie vernon, executive director, sigma xi, it adds a little creativity to how you might explain science"))) sot (((ron endres, volunteer, the prairie enthusiasts, i'm not trying to sell this to people who know about the prairie.

I'm trying to sell this to people to educate them on the ecosystem."))) and although some people didn't think endres' seed necklaces would sell...he's donated thoasunds of dollars to prairie rehabilitation.

Sot (((ron endres, volunteer, the prairie enthusiasts, if people pass by my booth and they take the time to engage with me, i almost always make the sale.

They really like the idea of it.))) sigma xi plans to continue its annual conference next year... which they say may include another art
