Andy Beshear, 41, the state attorney general and son of former Democratic Governor Steve Beshear, led by more than 10,000 votes with 98 percent of precincts reporting in a state that Trump won by 30 percentage points in 2016.

Bevin appeared poised on Tuesday to lose to Beshear, despite the state's strong Republican leanings and an election-eve rally headlined by U.S. President Donald Trump.

"Tonight voters in Kentucky send a message loud and clear for everyone to hear.

It's a message that says our elections don't have to be about right versus left.

They are about right versus wrong," said Beshear in a victory speech.

"We believe in lifting each other up instead of tearing each other down.

And here in Kentucky, we can still fight from the very top levels of government including the lost, and the lonely and the very left behind."
