Supreme Court Blocks Trump's Census Citizenship Question

Reuters reports the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday ruled in opposition of President Donald Trump's citizenship question in the 2020 census.

Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the 5-4 ruling after joining the court’s four liberals to create a majority.

A federal judge in January decision opposed the census question for a group of states and immigrant rights organizations that had challenged it.

Trump’s administration has said that it wanted to add the question in order to better enforce a law that protects the voting rights of racial minorities.

Justice Roberts cited the Administrative Procedure Act, which says the federal government is required to give a reasoned explanation for its actions.

He said the explanation from the administration “seems to have been contrived” and was “more of a distraction.”
