Anti-Adani Mine Protesters Block Streets in Brisbane

Protesters against a proposed coal mine in Queensland stopped traffic in Brisbane on June 21 as they marched across Victoria Bridge towards South Bank.

The demonstration follows the Queensland Government’s approval of the Carmichael coal mine project, to be operated by the Adani group.

Protesters estimated there were more than 2,000 marchers, but police reportedly put the figure closer to 1,000.

The Courier Mail said the crowd marched from Brisbane Square, over the Victoria Bridge, towards the ABC studios at South Bank.

They called on the government to “tear up the contracts” for the controversial mine.

TransLink tweeted that the protest had caused delays to multiple bus services on Friday night.

Construction has already started on the Carmichael mine, which would be the biggest coal mine in Australia and one of the biggest in the world.
