Trump says he welcomes foreign dirt on opponents

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he would see nothing wrong in accepting damaging information on a political opponent if it were offered by a foreign government.

Asked in an interview with ABC News if he would accept the information during a campaign or alert the FBI, Trump said: "I think maybe you do both.

I think you might want to listen, there's nothing wrong with listening...If somebody called from a country, Norway, 'we have information on your opponent' - oh, I think I'd want to hear it.” SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: “Russia, if you're listening..." During the campaign Trump implied that he’d welcome their help hacking the emails of his opponent, and subsequently went on to repeatedly use Wikileaks’ release of emails that US intelligence agencies were stolen by…Russia.

SOUNDBITE (ENGLISH) DONALD TRUMP, SAYING: “It’s been amazing what’s coming out on WikiLeaks.” "Wikileaks!

I love Wikileaks!" Trump’s eldest son attended a meeting in June of 2016 at which he thought a Russian lawyer would offer damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Three years later, the Mueller report concluded, despite documenting extensive contacts, that Trump's campaign didnt illegally conspire with Russia to alter the course of the race.

On Wednesday Trump downplayed getting help from foreign entities during a campaign as opposition research.

When told the FBI director himself said an American should report such activity, the president said "The FBI director is wrong.” His latest comments sparked outrage among Democrats.

Joe Biden tweeted: "President Trump is once again welcoming foreign interference in our elections." Elizabeth Warren wrote that "It's time to impeach Donald Trump."
