A woman who egged the Australian Prime Minister has been charged with assault.

The 24 year-old struck Scott Morrison while he campaigned at an event in Albury, New South Wales.

Morrison rubbed his head briefly after being struck by the egg - which didn't break.

An elderly woman fell to the floor as security tried to grab the protester.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER SCOTT MORRISON SAYING: "Well pardon the pun, but I don't want to over-egg this thing.

But, at the same time, what my concern for was for Margaret and the disregard that individuals seemed to have for those others who were in the room.

Margaret was a more elderly woman and she was bowled over in the exchange and I was able to help her up to her feet, I've contacted her since and I understand she's had some medical attention and she's fine and that's great, I'm pleased Margaret is fine." The woman said her action "speaks for itself" and she referred to Manus Island, in Papua New Guinea, where Australia has long detained refugees, according to a reporter.

Morrison is campaigning ahead of the general election on May 18th.

He's not the first Australian politician to be hit with an egg recently.

In March a teenager smashed one onto the head of Fraser Anning.

The right-wing lawmaker had blamed New Zealand's mosque shootings on the country's immigration programme.
