Death toll rises after Easter blasts in Sri Lanka

At least 207 people have been killed and many others injured after a series of blasts at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday - bringing an end to the lull in major attacks since the end of the civil war ten years ago.

The explosions - some of which officials say were suicide bombs - led to an immediate clampdown.

The government quickly declared a curfew - and blocked access to most major social media and messaging sites.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe strongly condemned what he called "cowardly attacks".

Some luxury hotels were targeted in the capital of Colombol.

Such as the five-star Shangri-La.

Footage from local media showed damage from the blasts inside one of the hotels, with ambulances driving away with the injured.

Colombo National Hospital said that many wounded people were brought in for treatment and according to a military spokesperson - troops have been deployed and security stepped up at Colombo's international airport.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attacks in a country that was at war for decades with Tamil separatists until 2009.

During that time - bomb blasts in the capital were common.
