Dems pass sweeping election reform bill

The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday passed legislation that Democrats say will lessen the influence of big-money interests in federal elections, make voting easier and tackle “gerrymandering” that skews the makeup of congressional districts to favor particular political parties.

Vanessa Johnston reports.

Dems pass sweeping election reform bill

In a vote sure to figure prominently on the 2020 campaign trail… The House of Representatives on Friday passed a sweeping bill Democrats say would curb the role of big money in politics and make it easier to cast a vote on election day… The " For the People Act" would match small campaign donations with federal dollars, in a bid to limit the influence of big donors… (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI SAYING: "So that the public again knows that everyone's voice is as important as anyone else's voice." Supporters say it also add fairness to the system by easing voter registration and giving voters more options on when to vote… The bill also targets gerrymandering..

A practice that reshapes districts to favor one party over another ..

It would require states to set up independent commission to draw districts..

Rather than state governors and lawmakers.

….

(SOUNDBITE) (English) REPRESENTATIVE JOHN LEWIS (D-GA) SAYING: "I believe we have a moral responsibility to restore access for all of our citizens who desire to participate in the democratic process." Republican critics of the bill say the measure would skew elections in favor of Democrats… (SOUNDBITE) (English) HOUSE MINORITY LEADER KEVIN MCCARTHY SAYING: "This new democrat socialist majority wants the federal government to interfere in our free and fair elections." The bill stands little chance of passing the Republican-controlled Senate, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has fervently opposed it… (SONDBITE) (English) SENATE MAJORITY LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL SAYING: "This is a terrible proposal." But Democratic officer seekers are expected to talk up the bill in the coming election year as they try to reclaim the White House and Senate… And in a jab at President Donald Trump..

Democrats included a provision requiring all presidents and presidential nominees to release their tax returns…
