The countdown is on for the magic of Hollywood to be celebrated at this weekend's Oscar ceremony.

And whether you'll be a guest at the ceremony or simply watching a hit movie in your local cinema, the chances are it's the soundtrack that will make you feel you're at the heart of the action.

Five of the eight movies that will vie for the Best Picture academy award on Sunday use Atmos and Vision, the latest technology developed by audio company Dolby.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SENIOR DIRECTOR OF DOLBY CINEMA EUROPE, JULIAN STANFORD, SAYING: "It's an immersive system which has speakers that are not only all round you but above your head and behind the screen" Dolby says the post-production system allows directors to place "up to 108 different sound objects in 3D space".

For those watching in an Atmos-equipped cinema, Dolby says sound can nuance the movie-going experience every bit as much as images.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SENIOR DIRECTOR OF DOLBY CINEMA EUROPE, JULIAN STANFORD, SAYING: "So when you're going to a movie that's say one of the Oscar contenders, you can hear and feel what they have done by placing the sound so carefully that your experience is enhanced." At one end of the decibel scale, the pivotal beach scene in "Roma" is largely silent, but the tonal textures remain key.

At the other, in the wall-of-noise Live Aid segment of "Bohemian Rhapsody", the director can place the bass to the left and the drums to the back.

The company says the end result is just like being placed on the stage with them.
