'We're Stuck Here' - Tourists Left Stranded at Hong Kong Airport Amid Protest-Led Shutdown
Thousands of anti-government protesters descended on Hong Kong’s international airport on August 12, prompting the cancellation of all flights out of the airport on Monday. The protesters swarmed the arrival and departure halls, following a weekend of clashes with police, the South China Morning Post reported. French tourist Rosie Bernheim told Storyful she was in Terminal 1 but didn’t know whether to stay or leave. “We’re stuck here,” she said. “Protesters have told us that maybe at 6[pm] the police will storm the terminal with tear gas and that we should leave. Others have told us its safer to stay inside. We’re not really sure what’s going on.” The airport is one of the busiest travel hubs in the world, but in a statement on Monday afternoon, the Hong Kong Airport Authority said all flights had been canceled because the airport’s operations had been “seriously disrupted.” The statement went on to say, “All passengers are advised to leave the terminal buildings as soon as possible.” Scenes turned violent over the weekend as police clashed with protesters, and footage emerged of a young woman allegedly shot in the eye by a police beanbag round.
