Drone reveals Elizabethan gardens thriving
Stunning drone pictures reveal Kenilworth Castle's world famous Elizabeth garden thriving a decade after it was unveiled amid controversy over the £3 million price tag.The one-acre walled garden was originally created by Robert Dudley as a love letter to Queen Elizabeth I.They were completely lost during and after the Civil War and over time were managed by various tenants and organisations.English Heritage took custodianship of the castle in 1984 and in 2009 recreated the gardens at a cost of £3 million based on Dudley's original design. To mark the 10th anniversary of the lost garden being unveiled, English Heritage has spent £70,000 on further "rejuvenation work."The six-month project has included relaying paths, repainting woodwork, replanting, and installing a new garden irrigation system. To mark the tenth anniversary of the gardens being opened to the public, the castle is holding 19 days of activities.Liz Page, the territory director for the west at English Heritage, said: "It is now ten years since we reconstructed and officially opened these Elizabethan gardens. In the time since then we have used the opportunity to make some significant additions."The reconstructed gardens provide a unique opportunity to experience the sumptuous beauty of Elizabethan art and culture, a visit this summer is an ideal opportunity to see them looking at their most magnificent."
